Heavenly Beach Bidderosa
There is no denying the tranquility and peace that the splashing sound of the sea offers. And while there are many pristine beaches to be seen across the world in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific, the Bidderosa beach can easily be counted among the most beautiful beaches of the world. With more than 300 sunny days, it definitely qualifies for a great place to be.
Located in the Gulf of Orosei the beach is covered under a natural reserve and therefore limited access is allowed. To be able to enter the beach area, tickets need to be purchased at the Guiso Museum of Orosei or the Forest Station of Orosei. It is always a good idea to check on the availability and book tickets in advance before making your plans for the entire day since only a limited number of cars (approximately 130 per day) are allowed inside each day. The best way to reach Biddeerosa beach is by taking the SS125.
Once you have been allowed entry, you shall have to park the car and walk along a path that is about 4 kilometers long. Only after this journey will you be able to reach the actual beach. But this small trek is so worth its while because the path is lined with junipers, pine trees, lilies and eucalyptus.
The Bidderosa beach has the whitest and most crystalline sand that you would have ever seen. Contrasted with the turquoise waters and the evocative colors of the red rocks, it presents a sight to be captured in memory forever. Five coves open on to the beach and form a quaint place for those who are looking for some privacy and serenity. With warm Mediterranean waters gushing towards the sand, the high tide may have some water coming into the coves as well.
The pond of Curcurica also adds to the beauty of the place and there are many people who prefer to come here and just spend a day, doing nothing at all. This is not a beach where you will find a lot of people windsurfing or snorkeling. It is a place where tourists and travelers come to rest their bodies and their minds and to get away from the humdrum of daily life. So if you are looking for some action like snorkeling and surfing, you may want to choose another Sardinia beach like Luna beach. But if you want to rest your nerves, then Bidderosa beach is the place for you.
Just lie back on the warm sand and hear the sea thrashing against the rocks and the coves and you will slowly drift into a state of semi consciousness that is sweet and mesmerizing.
Things to See and Do in Olbia
Called Terranoa in Sardegna, Olbia is a town that is inhabited by less than 60,000 people. Located in the northeastern part of Sardinia, it is a quaint place that still sees a fair amount of activity since it is one of the main places that connects mainland Italy with the island. The place also has a lot to offer the traveler in terms of historical monuments, great collections and interesting archaeological sites from the Italian culture.
The name of the town actually means ‘happy town’ even though it has a history of being destroyed and recreated many times. The place has received recent recognition due to the discovery of 24 ship wrecks from the times of Nero, the 5th century AD and the Judicial period.
As you land in this city or arrive at the port, make sure that you cover these few areas before you head towards other locations in the island.
The Town
The quintessential old town of Olbia offers you a sneak peek into the Greek and Roman style of living with roman baths and ancient churches. Do not miss the S. Simplicio Roman Church that is almost constructed completely with granite. You can get a glimpse of the ancient religious funeral rites of the Middle Ages. There is also the S. Paolo church with some awesome stained glass windows from the 17th century.
Phoenician and Roman Ruins
If you wander outside the main town you will see these ruins that are not typically a part of the guide books that you will find in the region. You will need to hire a local guide if you want to do more than just look at these ruins and understand the grandeur behind these ancient ruins.
The former cathedral of San Simplicio
The city’s ex Cathedral estimated to have been created in the 11th or 12th century is dedicated to St. Simplicio. The church was completed in three phases during this period over a Roman Necropolis.
Beach
If you have had your share of the ruins and ancient architecture, the beach is a great place to head off for a day of swimming, sunbathing, snorkeling and off course windsurfing. The best beach in Olbia is probably the areas around Coasta Smeralda resort. You will find instructors for snorkeling and windsurfing if you are trying it for the first time easily.
Massa Maria Club
After you have tired yourself out at the monuments, churches and the beach a good place to head off to is the club. This is Olbia’s favorite place to shake a leg and is rated extremely well by all travelers. The food and the drinks are not only delectable and sweet they are also not too expensive.
Some of the other options that you have while in the city are to visit the Holy Well of Sa Testa, the Medieval Castle of Pedres and the Nuragic Complex of Cabu Abbas. Nightlife in Olbia can be experienced at Golf Van Olbia, Affittacamere B&B Janas or Ciro's House. |
