The coastline of the Mediterranean island of Sardinia is one of the most spectacular in Europe. Thanks to its indentations and its many creeks, it is disproportionately long for such a comparatively small piece of land. In some parts of the island, granite cliffs plunge straight into the sea, but the gentler inclines offer a huge number of exquisite beaches. Some of these are long, wide belts of white sand lapped by the clearest of blue waters; others have dunes of blown sand the size of hills; others are little private crescent moons of sand between the warm arms of granite outcrops; others are backed by flowering scrub which fills the air with pungent Mediterranean scents in the hot sun.
One of the most enchanting of the beaches is Bidderosa, on the East coast, thought by some to be the best beach in Sardinia and in fact all Italy. It is made up of five beautiful, tranquil coves. The whole Oasis, as it is called, forms part of a Nature Reserve and is entered from one point, next to the Headquarters of the Forest Authorities on the SS 125, the only place where the necessary tickets can be obtained. Only 130 cars are allowed to enter each day so it is essential to arrive there early. The 4 kilometre drive from the entry point to the coves passes through fragrant woods of pine, eucalyptus and juniper before arriving in a paradise of fine, silver-coloured sand and crystal clear turquoise water. Some of the coves are just sandy while others are littered with red-coloured rocks. Here and there, shade is provided by a single tree or a clump of trees growing on the beach itself.
A rival for the title of Sardinia’s most perfect beach is Cala Luna, which translates as Moon Cove, named because of its crescent-shaped beach of pearly white sand. It is likewise on the East coast of the island, in the gulf of Orosei. Access is either via a rough, stony mule track ending with a stiff scramble, or by boat from Cala Gonone or Marina di Oroseibut. The shallow sea is ideal for children, so the availability of the boat option is very helpful. Snorkelers and scuba divers also revel in the clarity and calmness of the water. 6 caves open right onto the beach: these can readily be explored. However the Caves of the Monk Seal (Grotte del Bue Marino) named after the rare creature which inhabited them until the 1980’s, can only be reached by boat. Nearly a kilometre of this enormous cave system is illuminated and accessible. It is well worth making a trip there, particularly because of the extraordinary visual effects of stalactites and stalagmites reflected in the deep water of a massive underground salt lake.
